HISTORY,
BACKGROUND & USES:
Chlorine is very poisonous because of its great activity. Also
because of its activity it is not found free in nature. Chlorine
is the most abundant halogen. Chlorine is found in seawater, rock
salt beds, human gastric jucies. Practically all chlorine comes
from the electrolysis of brine, or a concentrated solution of
salt. Chlorine has a sharp, disagreeable odor that attacks the
skin and mucous membranes of the nose and throat. Much chlorine
is used to bleach wood pulp for the paper industry and cotton
and linen fabrics. Tap water is chlorinated to kill bacteria and
likewise swimming pools.
