BACKGROUND:
Barium chromate is a fine light yellow powder with the formula BaCrO4. The chromium occurs in the +6 oxidation state.

APPLICATIONS:
Used in some pyrotechnic compositions, especially delay compositions, as an oxidizer and/or burn rate modifier. It is also used as a pigment in paints, ceramics, coloring glasses, fuses, and porcelains. another use is as a corrosion inhibitor to prevent electrochemical corrosion at the joints of dissimilar metals. Used in safety matches, in metal primers, in ignition control devices and as an initiator for explosives.

CHEMISTRY:
It is very insoluble in water, but is soluble in acids:
2 BaCrO4 + 2 H+ ? 2 Ba2+ + Cr2O72- + H2O
